Keran area in frontier district of Kupwara lacks basic facilities like health care, electricity and good roads.

A light to heavy snowfall usually blocks the high altitude area and the dilapidated road – the only surface link connecting this town with rest of Kashmir – for months, aggravating the problems of the inhabitants, locals said.

The town having a population of around 14000 souls is located close to the Line of Control and is around 160 Kms from Srinagar.

“The road leading to the town is full of pot-holes and ditches. The 60 km distance from Kupwara headquarters that could be covered in two hours takes at least five hours,” A local Resident told ‘Kashmir Crown.

Absence of mobile and internet facilities in this digital age have made the things worse for residents. “When the entire world has become a global village, we are deprived of mobile and internet facility. Due to this we are unable to remain in touch with our children studying in Srinagar and outside the state,” said Zahoor Ahmad Lone Resident of Keran.

The town comprises of around 16 villages, which receive power for only three hour in 24 hours. “In absence of electricity the residents here still illuminate their houses with candles and age old kerosene lamps. Politicians visit Keran when elections are round the corner and promise people over all development but forget this backward region after assuming power,”Said another resident of Keran.
